How much should the gov't be abnle to monitor the internet?

Obviously the government in the US and the European governments have looked at bills trying to allow them to monitor what content people read/send etc.

How far do you think they should be allowed to watch us?

if you go that far then your basically working towards a communist state in my opinion
because you could start with cutting freedom on the internet and then work around to get less freedom in all other things >:o

But surely they need to be able to pick out the terrorists and criminals?

The need to find Terroist and criminals is very important. Taking a look at a sites content is the best they can do for now.

I think they're focused too much on piracy though.

I think they can catch terrorists by the data they have. They can already spot if an email is encrypted or w/e. Piracy is a consequence of the internet and you have to evolve to work with it because I don't think it's going away - the record companies have yet to do that.

i mean like.. didnt they pretty much say lets go kill megaupload and they did?
